Unlock Your Creative Potential 2: Word Play
As a Surface Pattern Designer, you will probably draw inspiration from the world around you. Nature, architecture and even the artwork you admire is likely to fuel and influence your creative process.
But have you ever considered turning to words as a way to explore new ideas?
Words, whether drawn from poetry, literature, song lyrics or simply a playful word association game, can ignite fresh ideas and open up exciting new avenues in your design process.
You are no doubt familiar with using words to promote your patterns, such as sharing the story behind your work or choosing the right words to reflect the mood and vibe evoked by your patterns.
But have you ever experimented with using words at the very beginning of your design process too?
Integrating words and meaning into your patterns in this way could strengthen your designs and enhance the stories held within them.
Let’s look at a few ways you can harness the power of words to inspire your next pattern or collection:
Use words as a Conceptual Starting point
Words can serve as an excellent jumping-off point for your pattern creation. Whether it’s a single word, phrase, or even a sentence, using a word as the foundation of your design allows you to inject layers of meaning and emotion into your work.
Start with a Word: Choose a word that resonates with you. It could be something abstract like "whimsy," "growth," or "fluidity." Let this word guide your exploration.
Visualize the Word: Think about what that word makes you feel or visualize. For example, if the word is "whimsy," your designs might feature playful shapes, soft colors, or unexpected patterns.
Example: The word "growth" could inspire a pattern featuring organic shapes like vines, leaves, or spirals—symbols of nature's constant expansion.
Create a Word Cloud for inspiration
A word cloud is a fun and easy exercise that can help you visualize a theme or idea. All you need to do is simply write down words related to your theme, mood or idea.
Exercise: Pick a theme, like "sea" or "urban," and write down words that relate to it. This could include colors, textures, moods, or objects you associate with that theme. Once you have a list, circle the words that stand out to you.
Design Exploration: Take the words that resonate most and explore how they can manifest as patterns. For example, the word "ocean" might inspire patterns with flowing, wavy lines, or soft, gradient blues.
Experiment with Word Association Games
Sometimes, playing with words can lead to surprising design ideas. A quick word association game can help unlock your creativity and move you out of a design rut.
Exercise: Start with a word that reflects your design concept. For example, if you’re designing a floral pattern, start with the word "petal." Then, write down the first words that come to mind: "soft," "delicate," "round," "overlap," etc. Next, use these words to inspire different elements in your pattern.
Word Pairs: Try combining two unrelated words and explore how they can come together in a pattern. For instance, "golden" and "geometric" might inspire a luxurious, abstract pattern featuring gold tones and sharp, angular shapes.
Tip: Let your mind wander freely. Don’t worry if the words seem disconnected at first. Often, the most unexpected combinations yield the most exciting results.
Draw Inspiration from Poetry and Literature
Literary works, whether poetry or prose, can spark deep emotional connections and open up visual possibilities. Words from a favorite poem, a passage in a novel, or even a line of dialogue can bring new life to your designs.
Exercise: Find a poem or a quote that resonates with you. For example, a line like “The sky was painted with streaks of orange and pink” could inspire a pattern full of soft, streaky textures in sunset hues.
Symbolism: Literature is full of symbolism, and you can pull from these symbolic references to create meaningful designs. A word like "journey" might lead to patterns symbolizing roads, paths, or abstract representations of movement.
Example: The quote “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” from Shakespeare could inspire a floral pattern, but with an abstract twist—roses with exaggerated, unusual shapes or fragmented edges.
Use Word Play in Pattern Names
Sometimes, the process of naming your patterns can be just as inspirational as creating them. Play with clever or poetic names to give your designs a unique voice.
Exercise: Once you’ve created a pattern, try to find a word or phrase that captures its essence. Could it be a fun pun or something poetic? Naming a pattern "Whirlwind" could inspire swirling, dynamic shapes. Or a pattern called "Eclipse" might incorporate soft, overlapping circles and gradients of dark to light colors.
Tip: Create a list of potential pattern names as you go along. You never know, a name might spark a new design direction or theme.
Turn Words into Visual Art
Finally, don’t be afraid to turn words themselves into art. Typography and lettering can be incorporated into surface pattern design, either as a subtle element or a bold statement.
Exercise: Choose a word or phrase and experiment with how it can be turned into a pattern. You can explore different fonts, hand-lettering styles, or even create a repeating pattern where the word is hidden within abstract forms.
Example: The word “breeze” might inspire a pattern where letters are subtly integrated into flowing lines or clouds, adding texture and motion.
Remember: Let words spark your creativity!
Words have the power to evoke emotions, inspire vivid imagery and challenge your thinking. By tapping into the creativity of language, you open up endless possibilities for your surface pattern designs. Whether it’s through word association, poetry, or even turning words into visual art, using words as a starting point for your designs can lead to unexpected and exciting results.
