The Art of Slowing Down: Why Creativity Begins in Stillness
For many years, I thought of creativity as something I did when I had time.
A space to explore ideas without really knowing what I was doing.
A way to make something beautiful.
A practice I returned to because I enjoyed the process of drawing, painting and creating.
But recently, I noticed something I had never fully acknowledged before.
Whenever life feels overwhelming, when my mind becomes crowded with thoughts or I feel like I am carrying too much, I have an instinctive urge to create.
Not to produce something perfect.
Not to achieve a particular outcome.
Simply to make.
A pen making marks on paper.
A brush thick with paint.
A simple sketch evolving into something unexpected.
The quiet rhythm of focusing on one small detail at a time.
It is as though my hands know what I need before my mind does.
Finding calm through the creative process
There is something deeply grounding about creating with your hands.
When we draw, paint, stitch, garden, cook or make something from scratch, we are brought into the present moment. Our attention moves away from the endless thoughts competing for space and towards something tangible.
One mark.
One colour.
One small decision.
The world becomes quieter.
For me, mandalas have become a beautiful expression of this.
The repetition of circles and patterns creates a natural rhythm. Each layer builds slowly upon the last. There is no need to rush towards the finished piece because the process itself becomes the meaningful part.
The artwork is not just the destination.
The journey matters too.
The things that bring us back to ourselves
I think many of us have creative parts of ourselves that become quieter as life becomes busier.
We convince ourselves we are too busy.
We tell ourselves we are not creative enough.
We wait for the perfect moment.
But perhaps creativity does not always need to be something big.
Perhaps it can simply be a few minutes spent doing something that helps us feel more like ourselves.
A small moment of pause.
A gentle reset.
A reminder that we are more than our endless lists and responsibilities.
An invitation to notice
This realisation has changed the way I view creativity.
I no longer see it only as a way of creating artwork.
I see it as a way of listening.
Listening to what we need.
Listening to what brings us peace.
Listening to the quiet parts of ourselves that are often overlooked.
My hope is not that everyone picks up a pencil and starts drawing mandalas. Creativity looks different for everyone.
My hope is simply that you notice what helps you slow down.
What brings you a sense of calm?
What makes you lose track of time?
What helps you feel present?
Sometimes the smallest creative moments can become the ones that carry us through the busiest seasons of life.
Every piece begins with a quiet moment.
Perhaps yours does too.
